Interesting Wiki Story in the News

Wow! I can't believe I haven't touched my blog in over a month! Show's how time flies when you are extremely busy!!!

Did anybody else hear all the recent wiki stories? I was cracking up listening to Hot 99.5 on the way to work this morning. They started out talking about the Sinbad story. I guess there was a post on Wikipedia last week that he was found dead, but really wasn't. Then the radio station found out they have a page about them on Wikipedia and some listeners had been posting some really silly things about them up there. Kind of made me think back to our Authors Page experience in our Commerce building.

When we hear things like that happening in the news, it publicly announces to everybody how easy it is to manipulate wikipedias. When people hear how fun it is to do that kind of stuff, how are we going to be able to take a serious approach to it in our classrooms? I guess that is another puzzle that we, as educators, will have to solve.

I totally agree with you Starlyn. I think that may be just the feel that some administration may have, or even parents. I know a question was raised to me about how I would assess the students on blogs and wikis when I talking about it to some co-workers. Makes you wonder doesn't it?!

As Christina mentions, assessment is something you need to consider, but after your ITS experience, how might you respond to these colleagues?

I agree that Wikipedia is a problem if you are thinking of it as a reliable source. Our librarian is always pulling her hair out when teachers bring students to do research and they look to Wikipedia.

Wikis themselves are a great tool that can be used with students as long as you make them be responsible authors.
