So my blog assignment with my student tech assistants is not going over too positively. They really truly think this is torture and I am out to get them for something. I graded their assignments based on what they did. I gave the boys who titled their blog 'Dia de Sh#!t' in Spanish a 14/20 and a 15/20. I have never been so shocked by the rudeness of students. They're like 'what's wrong w/saying crap? it's my blog & i'll say what I want to say?' For those that are curious...here are their blogs (please do NOT comment on them though). It can be an interesting learning observation.

Comments & Suggestions are welcome. I really honestly never thought having them write a reflection about their actions would create this much commotion. One of the boys has asked his counselor if he could audit the class. Have kids really gotten that lazy?!?

Thanks to contacting parents, they have cleaned up & edited them. The 2nd kid deleted his completely. They all completely hate me and want nothing more to do with me bc of this assignment. Go figure....
Starlyn,
I think that they will eventually get over themselves. I think that your doing the right thing by making them correct themselves. They may not appreciate it now, however, they will appreciate this experience in the long run. Give it a little more time.

I am surprised these guys have made such a big deal out of this. It seems like kind of a fun thing to do for high school students....way better than calculus, for example. I still think it was a great idea and a perfect example of blending "real life technology" and school - allowing them to reflect on what they're doing...or not doing.
Starlyn, I was thinking about your problem and I was struck by the thought that blogs themselves may be your problem. Check out my blog and let me know what you think.
Starlyn, I've been thinking about your dilemma. Why did you have those kids (and I mean that in the immature sense of the word, given their writing) use blogs?
I had the kids do the blog so that they could have a log showing what they do in class. I thought it could be a way to bring the tech team together, since they're in 4 different class periods and sometimes problems carry over. I also wanted them to look back and instead of saying 'oh i didn't do anything in that class,' they could look back & say 'oh on feb. 3rd i helped a teacher install a driver for a tv connection etc. Some students are able to get internships based on their tech experiences and this could be a good reminder of what they did. One of my student techies is a part time TSSPC.
Starlyn,
Just an idea to toss out. Rather than have each student create a blog about their personal work, why not create one blog for all tech assistants. In this blog, you could create a post for each "job" and they comment what they did and the status of that "job". This would allow all four periods to see the progress made for the jobs and not require students to personally reflect, but still see how blogs can record experiences and so forth. Also, if the students know they are a part of a blog bigger than themselves, they might cut down on the sarcasm. This would also give you more control while giving them some control and let you check on the jobs to make sure they're getting done properly.
I wouldn't take your students' reactions personally. I don't even think its the fact that they have to do a blog that bothers them. Most students, it seems, feel like anytime that they have to do something that seems to be an "extra," that they get frustrated. I think it has a lot to do with this generation, unfortunately.
Not sure if anybody will read this again....but as a follow up...about a week after this assignment, I never saw one of the kids again. Yes, he is on my class list, but has chosen to skip everyday and take the F all because of a blog.
