End of ITS

My oh my where does time go!!! I cannot believe that tomorrow night is our last class. In 10 days we will be done with the entire program. I was so excited to turn in my practicum last night and have immediate feedback this morning that it was accepted and good to go!

Now if I could just get my PLPs passed off. I submitted it quite some time ago and got it back yesterday with a Redo Again...so I immediately sent my response because I wasn't sure when it would be sent back again. A few hours later, I get the 'try again with feeling message.' I know my PLP was good for this one too. My feeling on that whole section is at this point I just wanna be done! ahhhh! Anybody else frustrated with the online course or got any tips to meet my mentor's standards?

Podcasting

I'm not much of a fan of actually creating podcast and listening to my own voice. However, I do think they would make great projects in the classroom. They were fun to create during our class. I struggled at first for a lesson plan because I don't really teach. I ended up and made an assignment for my tech aids to make podcast for technology tips for teachers. I think it could work. It would be more fun to do in a Science or English class. Or a music class would be a great place for them. Another problem we see with this is acquiring the microphones. Podcast become available at FCPS on blackboard this Friday, May 4!!

Interesting Wiki Story in the News

Wow! I can't believe I haven't touched my blog in over a month! Show's how time flies when you are extremely busy!!!

Did anybody else hear all the recent wiki stories? I was cracking up listening to Hot 99.5 on the way to work this morning. They started out talking about the Sinbad story. I guess there was a post on Wikipedia last week that he was found dead, but really wasn't. Then the radio station found out they have a page about them on Wikipedia and some listeners had been posting some really silly things about them up there. Kind of made me think back to our Authors Page experience in our Commerce building.

When we hear things like that happening in the news, it publicly announces to everybody how easy it is to manipulate wikipedias. When people hear how fun it is to do that kind of stuff, how are we going to be able to take a serious approach to it in our classrooms? I guess that is another puzzle that we, as educators, will have to solve.

What Can I do With a Wiki?

This week we are reading about wikis in class. A wiki is a website that allows the visitors to easily add, remove, and edit the available content. We have been hearing more about this feature at my SBTS meetings as well. In April, these will be available via Blackboard. So then the challenge comes...what do we do with them?

Yesterday I was talking with my kids who were anti-blogging due to senioritis. I told them I was going to have them do a wiki...completely kidding with them. They were like 'why must you torture us with all these new ideas?' So I told them it was coming to Blackboard and next year when they were in college they were going to see that stuff all over Blackboard. They were like 'they have Blackboard at college?' hahaha. I told them how much we used Blackboard at Virginia Tech and we were expected to print all of our notes off of Blackboard and how that was 5 years ago (wow...has it really been?) They were in denial...however, on a side note, their behavior has improved again. I spoke with the assistant principals & then they spoke to them.

Happy Early Dismissal/Snow Days to all!

My Students Hate This

So my blog assignment with my student tech assistants is not going over too positively. They really truly think this is torture and I am out to get them for something. I graded their assignments based on what they did. I gave the boys who titled their blog 'Dia de Sh#!t' in Spanish a 14/20 and a 15/20. I have never been so shocked by the rudeness of students. They're like 'what's wrong w/saying crap? it's my blog & i'll say what I want to say?' For those that are curious...here are their blogs (please do NOT comment on them though). It can be an interesting learning observation.

Comments & Suggestions are welcome. I really honestly never thought having them write a reflection about their actions would create this much commotion. One of the boys has asked his counselor if he could audit the class. Have kids really gotten that lazy?!?

Joys of My Blogging Assignment

Yesterday, I decided to follow up with my previous blogging assignment and have my student tech aids create blogs. For most of them this was fine. However, for my aids with serious senioritis, this has become the most hated project possible for them. They both titled their first entries as 'Day of Crap #1' and then they posted what they did for the day in binary code. I made the mistake of commenting back on here, and then that's why if you look on here, I now have 2 blog accounts. The other is to interact with them.

However, I know that they are not really too upset about this because their business teacher told me he saw them enhancing their blog sites during class. They will whine to me, but I think it will end up and be a good project. I will have to share the links in class.

Blogging in Teaching

I have been thinking of ways that I could incorporate blogging into my job. I am the school based technology specialist at a high school. I have student tech aids. Lately this student tech crew has been slacking off and not staying on task. They have been rude to teachers and breaking the acceptable use policy when not under direct supervision. Then the idea came to me.

After last Thursday night's stimulating discussion of blogging, I have come up with the idea to have my student tech aids, do a daily blog of what they did in class. They can report to me, who they helped, what they did, what problems they solved etc. They can also interact with the assistants in other class periods by reading what they have done and commenting on their blogs. I think the introduction of this assignment has come at the perfect time for my program.
